Kandhamal turmeric received its Geographical Indication on 1 April 2019, registered for the turmeric grown by tribal farmers in the Kandhamal district of Odisha.

It is organic without a programme having made it so. Farmers use traditional methods of production and no fertiliser is applied, which means the crop meets an organic standard it was never designed around. The GI cites its physical and chemical characteristics, medicinal properties, industrial uses and inherent organic nature.

The scale is real without being industrial: roughly 13,600 hectares under dry turmeric, yielding close to 24,000 tonnes annually. That is a volume you can build a programme on, from a supply base of smallholders rather than estates.

[ Why here ]
PhulbaniKandhamal · Odisha

Central Odisha hill country farmed by Kandha growers on small plots. Rain-fed, rotated, and untouched by synthetic input — the aroma is markedly deeper than plains-grown turmeric of the same assay.
